Astrology 101 ; Houses

Houses Within a Birth Chart

Physically, the horoscope chart is a circle divided into twelve segments, one for each sign of the Zodiac. As a circle contains 360°, each segment allotted to a sign contains 30° (from 0° through 29°). Each of the twelve segments is also called a “house” … and each house deals with a specific area of a person’s life.

The Houses

FIRST HOUSE   (ARIES is the natural ruler.)

This is the field of experience in which you are challenged to develop your own unique identity and present it to the world.

Traditionally this house is associated with personal appearance.

SECOND HOUSE    ( TAURUS is the natural ruler.)

This is the field of experience in which you are challenged to define and refine your personal sense of values. The things, talents, and qualities that you treasure, cherish, enjoy, and hold on to for security are here.

Traditionally this house is associated with ; inner and outer talents and resources, personal values.

THIRD HOUSE     ( GEMINI is the natural ruler.)

This is the field of experience in which you are challenged to organize personal experiences to form your own unique picture of the world, and then communicate your perceptions to others.

Traditionally this house is associated with; brothers and sisters; basic education; eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity.

FOURTH HOUSE     ( CANCER is the natural ruler.)

This is the field of experience in which you are challenged to develop your capacity for emotional closeness; to find a feeling of security ; and to face the effects your early childhood experiences had upon you.

Traditionally this house is associated with; nurturing; inherited traits; unconditional love; the type of home you establish.

FIFTH HOUSE     ( LEO is the natural ruler.)

This is the field of experience in which you are challenged to develop your creativity and self-esteem, and to find joy in living.

Traditionally this house is associated with; children; enthusiasm; creativity; and motivation.

SIXTH HOUSE    ( VIRGO is the natural ruler.)

This is the field of experience in which you are challenged to seek competence; to function efficiently, in your physical body and in your work.

Traditionally this house is associated with ; work; health; services; habit patterns; food; diet; pets.

SEVENTH HOUSE    ( LIBRA is the natural ruler.)

This is the field of experience in which you are challenged to develop committed relationships with others.

Traditionally this house is associated with; your attitudes toward spouses and partners; intimate relationships; friends; dealings with the public; what you look for in others.

EIGHTH HOUSE    ( SCORPIO is the natural ruler.)

This is the field of experience in which you are challenged to boldly wrest all the powers of your psyche from the deep, dark underworld; focus all that power with ruthless intensity on the process of breaking down your reality structure into little pieces, then reassemble all the pieces into a new whole. Here is the place where all the taboos of society are addressed; where you dig into your own “internal garbage” to find the treasure hidden there. Think of a compost heap where all the bits of decaying food break down and eventually turn into fertilizer to nourish new growth.

Traditionally this house is associated with; other peoples’s resources (possessions, money); sex; death and regeneration.

NINTH HOUSE    ( SAGITTARIUS is the natural ruler. )

This is the field of experience in which you are challenged to broaden your philosophical perspectives and to realize your highest potentials.

Traditionally this house is associated with; the higher mind; higher education; law; in-laws; grand children.

TENTH HOUSE    ( CAPRICORN is the natural ruler.)

This is the field of experience in which you are challenged to earn respect and recognition in the world.

Traditionally this house is associated with; ambition; status; reputation; career; the parent who set limits for you as a child.

ELEVENTH HOUSE    ( AQUARIUS is the natural ruler.)

This is the field of experience in which you are challenged to establish a relationship with group consciousness and contribute your gifts to community.

Traditionally this house is associated with; humanitarian organizations; associations; friends; hopes, wishes and and ambitions; shared ideals.

TWELFTH HOUSE    ( PISCES is the natural ruler.)

This is the field of experience in which you are challenged to explore your inner depths in solitude and silence; to discern between illumination and illusion, between spiritual growth and escapism. Before you can transcend the definitions of reality that confine you, you must be willing to let go of them. These definitions often have to become uncomfortable before we want to let go of them. Disillusionment and the experience of “bad luck” can create the desire to move through and beyond what is causing the pain.

Traditionally this house is associated with; the unconscious; self undoing; sacrifice; karma; secrets; secret enemies; hospitals and institutions of confinement.

Astrology 101 ; The Basics

The Zodiac

The Zodiac is an imaginary belt in the heavens approximately 20 degrees wide, containing the path of the Sun the Moon and that of the principle Planets in this Solar System with the occasional exception of Pluto. It is divided into Twelve equal parts or signs, of 30 degrees each across its circumference. Each sign is named for a different constellation found therein … and these comprise the list of astrological signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.

Horoscope

Sometimes this word is used to designate the forecast or prediction of events based on the alignment of planets in the sky at any given time. As such, it has been seriously abused and twisted by the popularized (and usually meaningless and sappy) “fortune-cookie” versions that appear in newspaper features and other products we all know so well.

A horoscope to an astrologer, however, is a map of the sky … charted in a circular diagram … of where the different planets were located and their relationship to each other at a specific time of interest — such as the moment of birth of a person, event, or other “entity.”

Astrology 101 ; Your Ascendant

The Ascendant

The Ascendant is also called the “Rising Sign” of a person’s chart. Astrologers use the two terms interchangeably. It is literally the sign that was rising on the Eastern horizon of the sky at the time you were born in the place where you were born. This is why it is essential to have both a birthplace and a birth time in order to cast a completely valid Natal Chart.

All twelve signs of the Zodiac rotate across the sky in the course of a day. Therefore the sign that is ascending … literally “rising” … on the eastern horizon changes every two hours. And your Rising Sign … or Ascendant Sign … depends on the exact time you were born!

Your Ascendant sign describes your temperament, your outward mannerisms and behavior, the personality you put “on public display.” It is the part of yourself you are most willing for other people to see in casual, impersonal situations. Changes here will explain why even people born on the same day as you … will have very different personalities, different strengths and interests, and different life experiences.

Forecasts based on your Ascendant sign are likely to be immediately recognizable in describing the events and focus of your life and immediate future. These contain perhaps the most important and valid information you can receive from a “general” astrology reading … about what explicitly is happening in your life. In this way, your Ascendant sign information is even more crucial, important … and applicable than your Sun sign information

Astrology 101 ; Your Sun & Moon Sign

The Sun

One of the three major personal placements in an individual’s horoscope, along with The Moon and the Ascendant, and arguably the most important. As with all the planetary energies, the Sun will occupy one of the twelve signs of the Zodiac at any given moment. The sign where the Sun is found at the time a person is born determines, obviously, his Sun Sign - and this is what it means when we say a person is an Aries, or he is a Scorpio - that the Sun was found in Aries or in Scorpio respectively at the moment he was born.

To an astrologer, the Sun’s position describes the qualities of your basic ego, your individual self-expression, your personal identity. The metaphor of the Sun, therefore represents your core personality, your essential self, your ego, your sense of personal identity, your inherent focus, your overtly expressed urge to manifest your destiny or importance in life.

The Moon

One of the three major personal placements in an individual’s horoscope, along with the Sun and the Ascendant. Traditionally it is considered the second most important placement, but in practice, I don’t find this to be a hard-and-fast rule. Some people will show their Moon Sign energy more overtly than their Sun Sign energy. The Moon changes signs approximately every 2 and a half days - traveling through all twelve signs of the Zodiac in the course of a month.

The energy of the Moon Sign will most definitely color the basic personality type of a Sun Sign … making this one of the many, but more significant, reasons why personalities can vary so much within each Sun Sign category. In other words, obviously, not all Leos or Capricorns are alike - and the different combinations of Sun Sign and Moon Sign energy are a significant part of the astrological reasons why this is true.

The Moon represents the emotional self, the inner self, your instincts, habits, automatic reactions and your sense of personal heritage and history. Most people feel their Moon Sign energy very strongly - some even to the point of identifying with their Moon Sign (once they know what it is - and without having their horoscope chart done, there is really no way to know for sure) more than with their Sun Sign. This is a very valid feeling, in fact, for the Moon represents who a person is on the inside … and this is where most people feel they are most strongly their real selves.
